Faculty of Materials and Chemical Engineering
Dean’s Office
From the Dean
Materials science and chemistry is a rapidly evolving field of study around the world. Those who choose it as their profession learn not only about the structure and properties of materials, but also about the environmentally friendly and energy-saving technologies needed to produce, manufacture and modify materials. Our faculty has always been at the forefront in materials engineering education in Hungary and has become a national centre for training. It is now possible to obtain a degree in chemical engineering here. We started this programme with the same dedication as to materials engineering, and our aim is nothing less than to establish world-class training in Miskolc.
In our everyday life, we are increasingly likely to encounter the special materials (such as shape memory alloys, magnetic fluids, or ceramics, metals, polymers and composites containing nanoparticles) that most people first hear about at the University of Miskolc after starting their bachelor studies at the Faculty of Materials Engineering, either in Materials Engineering or Chemical Engineering.
Today, the centre of the Hungarian chemical industry is Miskolc and the 30-kilometre area surrounding it, which includes Kazincbarcika (BorsodChem), Sajóbábony (KISS Group) and Tiszaújváros (MOL MPK) – a region where the demand for well-trained professionals is growing. This is one of the reasons why we decided to launch a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering in September 2019. The first master’s degrees will be awarded to our graduates in spring 2023. Those who choose engineering as a career and take their studies seriously can look forward to a secure livelihood and many rewarding professional challenges. Our graduate engineers have a wide range of attractive job opportunities to choose from, as engineers are in short supply. Young people with high-quality technical skills and ambition are sought both in Hungary and abroad.
Our university offers green natural surroundings, state-of-the-art training facilities, modern infrastructure and varied and attractive leisure activities. Our students also benefit from the care we take to uphold our historical traditions (dating back to 1735), which foster a sense of professionalism and community belonging. The relatively small size of the faculty creates a family atmosphere, and teachers and students get to know each other well. This is one reason that our students achieve nationally outstanding results with their research student projects. The President of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and the minister supervising higher education have regularly awarded the Pro Scientia Gold Medal to our most outstanding students and the Master Teacher Gold Medal to our most outstanding research supervisors.
We are proud of the good reputation of our engineering graduates and that prestigious companies seek new graduates from Miskolc! The Faculty of Materials and Chemical Engineering pays special attention to serving the needs of industry and students. This is demonstrated by the fact that in 2015 we were among the first to launch a dual BSc programme involving both work and study, which is also available for Chemical Engineering BSc students. We recommend this type of training for dedicated students who want to enter the workforce as fresh graduates who already have substantial experience in industry. The University of Miskolc is at the forefront of dual training nationwide, with the largest number of dual partner companies per bachelor’s degree in the country, and students can choose from nearly 60 companies. The large number of companies that have joined our dual training programme shows the value and prestige of the diploma we offer.
I am convinced that our faculty, with its centuries-old historical tradition, offers the high level of knowledge expected in the 21st century so that our students can become professionals with a great future. If this opportunity appeals to you, apply to the Faculty of Materials and Chemical Engineering. We look forward to welcoming you!
