Faculty of Materials and Chemical Engineering

Admission

Dear Applicant!

Shape your future! Become a Materials Engineer or a Chemical Engineer!

Most contemporary products are made from engineered materials. Throughout history, it has always been humankind that has developed usable substances: tanning leather, impregnating wood, hardening steel, vulcanizing rubber, or firing porcelain. Consider your belt, the chair you are sitting on, the edge of your pocketknife, the plastic flooring, the tires of your bicycle, your mug, your mobile phone, or your computer — all are based on engineered materials, representing thousands of solutions and countless qualities. Materials engineers and chemical engineers are, in many respects, the versatile professionals of the future, highly sought after across Europe. Each field of application requires a specific type of material: alloys, metals, rubbers, plastics, ceramics, semiconductors, construction materials, wood composites, or glass.

But who could possibly master such a wide range of materials? For example, you!

During the Materials Engineering program, you will acquire comprehensive professional knowledge: you will truly understand all types of manufactured materials, and if your preferred field becomes less relevant, you will be able to continue your career in another. In the Chemical Engineering program, a nationally unique, personalized educational model supports your academic progress, while partnerships with companies in the chemical industry ensure that you can establish daily professional connections even as a student. After obtaining your bachelor’s degree, master’s programs (MSc) across Europe – including, of course, the University of Miskolc – will be available to further specialize in your chosen field.

Our certified materials and metallurgical engineers, as well as our graduates holding BSc and MSc degrees, are in high demand across a wide range of industries. Our Faculty benefits from an extensive industrial background and strong professional network. As a result, our graduates receive numerous job offers: engineers are in short supply, and industries are seeking young professionals with high-level technical expertise.

Statistical analyses from recent years clearly demonstrate that engineers are among the most sought-after professionals today. Their career prospects are continuously improving, both in terms of employment opportunities and competitive salaries.

Get to know our traditions!

When first-year students arrive in September at the University Town of Miskolc, they are amazed by the sight — impressive not only from a bird’s-eye view. Although the campus is part of the city, it forms a world of its own within the 85-hectare park of the Dudujka Valley. In one of the most beautiful university towns in Europe, a wide range of services make everyday life easier. The campus offers an international variety of cuisine in its restaurant, nearly a dozen buffets in the academic buildings, as well as two bakeries, two grocery stores, and a pizzeria.

Continue your studies with us!

Anyone applying to a higher education institution in Hungary will study within the linear training system introduced as part of the Bologna Process. This system is multi-level, with each level building on the previous one. At our Faculty, the following programs are available:

  • BSc in Materials Engineering

  • BSc in Chemical Engineering

  • MSc in Materials Engineering

  • MSc in Metallurgical Engineering

Why apply to our Faculty?

Materials science and the chemical industry are among the fastest developing fields worldwide. Those who choose this profession will not only gain knowledge of the structure and properties of materials, but will also become familiar with environmentally friendly and energy-efficient material technologies required for producing, manufacturing, and modifying them. Our Faculty has been a pioneer in establishing and promoting materials engineering education in Hungary, and today it has become the national center of this discipline. With the same dedication, we are launching our Chemical Engineering program this year, with the clear goal of establishing world-class education in Miskolc.

In everyday life, we increasingly encounter special materials — such as shape-memory alloys, ceramics with nanoparticles, metals, polymers and their composites, or magnetic fluids — most of which our students first hear about when they begin their studies at the Faculty of Materials Science and Engineering, in either the Materials Engineering or the Chemical Engineering BSc program. The Hungarian chemical industry is concentrated in Miskolc and its 30 km vicinity, stretching from Kazincbarcika (BorsodChem) through Sajóbábony (KISS Group) to Tiszaújváros (MOL MPK), where the demand for highly qualified professionals continues to grow. This was also one of the main reasons for launching the Chemical Engineering BSc program in September 2019.

Those who choose an engineering career and take their studies seriously can count on secure employment and professionally rewarding challenges. Our graduates are offered multiple attractive job opportunities, as there is a constant shortage of engineers. Young professionals with solid technical knowledge and strong ambition are sought after both in Hungary and abroad.

For their studies, our University offers an exceptional natural environment that combines peaceful surroundings with state-of-the-art educational opportunities, modern infrastructure, and a wide variety of attractive leisure programs. Our students also value the fact that we carefully preserve our historical traditions (dating back to 1735), which strengthen both professional commitment and a sense of community. The relatively small size of our Faculty creates an almost family-like atmosphere, with exceptionally close relationships between professors and students. This, in part, explains why our students consistently achieve outstanding results in national Scientific Students’ Associations (TDK) competitions. The President of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and the Minister responsible for higher education have regularly awarded our most excellent students the Pro Scientia Gold Medal, while our most distinguished supervisors have been honored with the Master Teacher Gold Medal.

We take pride in the fact that graduates of our Faculty of Materials Science and Engineering enjoy an excellent reputation, and prestigious companies explicitly seek out engineers educated in Miskolc. Our Faculty pays particular attention to serving the needs of both industry and students. This is reflected in the fact that, as early as 2015, we were among the first to launch so-called dual BSc programs, and since 2019, the newly introduced BSc program in Chemical Engineering has also been available in dual form. We recommend this form of study to those highly committed students who wish to graduate not only with a diploma but also with several years of industrial experience. The University of Miskolc is a national leader in dual education; within a single bachelor’s program, we have the highest number of industrial partners in the country. Our students can choose from nearly 60 companies as dual training sites. The high number of partner companies clearly demonstrates the value and prestige of the degree obtained here.

I am convinced that at our Faculty, with its centuries-long traditions, we provide knowledge that fully meets the expectations of the 21st century, enabling our students to become excellent professionals with bright futures. If this opportunity appeals to you, apply to the Faculty of Materials Science and Engineering — we warmly welcome you!
