TDK - Student's Scientific Research Conference

a decisive step into the world of science

What does it mean to participate in scientific student work?

Date of TDK in the 2023/24. spring semester: 30th April, 2024.

What does it mean: TDK?

TDK at the Faculty

TDK is an acronym for Tudományos Diákkör (literally “Academic Student Circle”), but it is actually a concept. The Student Research Society is a way of life for both the student and the consultant, and something that everyone chooses and does with enthusiasm.

Why would you choose it? Because the university curriculum is rather dry? And because you are overwhelmed by the knowledge you HAVE TO learn and master to pass an exam? Because you might be captivated by an exciting-sounding subject title and think university goes beyond the obligatory credits and social activities and parties? Because it feels good to walk into a department, even in your third semester, and be known by name, be allowed to work in the lab and use the tools you only dared to look at from afar in lab classes? Because no one is looking at what you’ve memorised or what your grade average is, but rather how much time you put in, how many measurements you take and how much you want to understand what you’re doing or the results you’re getting? Because you learn to write an academic paper without any risk before you have to write your thesis? Or learn to give a presentation and try figuring out how you can present 30 slides in 10 minutes – before the final exam?  And practice speaking in front of strangers? These are all reasons why!  And you have the chance to win an award! If you’re good, we’ll even take you to conferences and you can present there – even abroad, even in America!

Are you still not sure what this is all about? Ask us! If you don’t know what a good topic would be and who would be a good consultant for it, then ask! If you start a research project together, your consultant will be excited too, so when you start working together, don’t let them down! If you don’t dare ask me or don’t believe me, ask your fellow students, the best of them: I highly recommend Máté Sepsi and Viktor Kárpáti from the faculty committee.

For many years, our faculty has been engaged in high-quality scientific student research. This is proven, among other things, by the fact that the Pro Scientia Gold Medal winners for outstanding academic achievements and TDK work in national conferences include an exceptionally high number of students from our faculty. Out of the 49 prizes awarded so far in the Technical Sciences Section, 10 have been won by students from our faculty. Taking into account the number of students in the faculty, the number of Pro Scientia Gold Medal awards per capita is much higher than in other higher education institutions in Hungary.

The Faculty TDK conference takes place in the autumn semester. The deadline for submission of papers is mid-November, and 25-35 papers are usually submitted by students of our faculty. The topics of the papers cover all themes of institutes of the faculty, which means that papers are written on chemical engineering, organic and inorganic chemistry, materials testing and materials technology of polymers, metals and ceramics, and energy and environmental problems.

National Conference of Student Research Societies (OTDK)

As the largest scientific event in the country, the Hungarian National Conference of Student Research Societies (OTDK) is an important element of our national strategy for quality Hungarian higher education. The conference has a six-decade history, and its special role in higher education talent management is enshrined in Act CCIV of 2011 on National Higher Education. The aim of the conference series is to recognise the work of talented students in higher education, to strengthen and support teacher-student relations, and to publicise and raise awareness of student academic activity nationwide.

The Council of the National Scientific Students’ Associations (OTDT), with the support of the ministries involved in higher education, the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, and national institutions, organisations and foundations, provide moral, professional and financial support for the National Conference of Student Research Societies in 16 disciplinary sections, held every two years in the spring.
