Reliability – Checking Publishers and Journals

Publishing new scientific results is a fundamental pillar of doctoral training. Before submitting manuscripts, it is definitely worth researching which journals meet scientific standards. It is in everyone's interest that our scientific results do not fall into unreliable hands or into journals that do not provide adequate professional standards.

When selecting a journal, it is worth considering the following:

  • Do we know anyone who has already published there? Have we read or cited articles from this journal?

  • Is the journal’s database accessible through the university network? Does such a database exist at all?

  • On the journal’s website, are the committee members’ and editors’ photos in good resolution? Is the website professionally designed?

  • After searching for the editors, do they actually work where the website claims, and is their research relevant to the field?

  • Is there an online system for manuscript submission? Never send a paper directly by email to the addresses provided on the website!

  • Is there information available on the peer review process?

  • Is the journal indexed in scientific databases? (This can be checked using the links mentioned above: Scimago, MTMT, DOAJ.)

  • Does the website indicate any publication fee? If a publication fee is required at submission, it is essential to consult with the supervisor or the head of the doctoral school before sending the manuscript!
